Chinese state media now with more Communist Party propaganda

Mar 22, 2018

BEIJING — Chinese state media will be getting more propaganda now that the Communist Party has announced it will be in direct control of broadcasters and the regulators of everything from movies and TV to books and radio programs. The move is part of a push by President Xi Jinping — emboldened by the removal of term limits on his time in office — to tighten party supervision over broad swaths of Chinese public life as he pushes for what he calls "unity in thought" among officials and citizens. Analysts say having direct oversight of the media will help the...

MeToo takes off in South Korea, but justice harder to attain

Mar 22, 2018

SEOUL, South Korea — The #MeToo movement has taken off with surprising rapidity in South Korea, toppling male celebrities and a prominent politician in a country where men have long brushed off sexual misconduct allegations and continued with their careers. How far will it go? South Korea largely remains a deeply conservative and patriarchal society rampant with sexism both casual and overt. It has the largest gender pay gap among developed countries and ranks 118th out of 144 nations in the World Economic Forum's global gender gap index, the lowest among the G-20 members. While human rights and other progressive...

White House increasingly facing questions about Trump's past

Mar 22, 2018

WASHINGTON — Haunted by Russia and beset by internal strife, Donald Trump's White House is also increasingly being forced to confront allegations from the president's past, as an adult film star, a former Playboy model and a onetime "Apprentice" contestant press court cases. In court, on social media and with upcoming television interviews, these women are making allegations about Trump's past sexual exploits. And while previous accusations have not derailed the thrice-married businessman, now they are surfacing in the context of the rising #MeToo movement. The White House has little to say publicly about the accusations, which are only likely...
