'Game of Thrones' co-stars Kit Harington, Rose Leslie wed

Jun 23, 2018

LONDON — Former "Game of Thrones" co-stars Kit Harington and Rose Leslie married Saturday with a church service and a celebration at the bride's ancestral castle in Scotland. The couple and guests arrived for the afternoon service at Rayne Church, close to the 900-year-old Wardhill Castle in northeast Scotland, which is owned by Leslie's family. Harington, wearing a morning suit, and Leslie, in a flowing ivory gown and veil, smiled at members of the public who had gathered outside the church. Guests included the pair's "Game of Thrones" co-stars Peter Dinklage, Maisie Williams, Sophie Turner and Emilia Clarke. Later the...

Racist tropes in Ramadan TV satires anger black Arabs

Jun 23, 2018

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — In an attempt to capitalize on what's become a ratings bonanza for Arabic satellite channels during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, two comedies struck the wrong chord with audiences when their lead actors appeared in blackface. Criticism was swift on social media, but failed to trigger a deeper discussion on racism in the Middle East. The shows — one produced in Egypt and the other in Kuwait — also poked fun at Sudanese culture, making a mockery of the Sudanese Arabic dialect and portraying darker skinned people from Sudan as either poor or lazy....

Vinnie Paul, co-founder and drummer of metal band Pantera, has died at 54. Pantera's official Facebook page posted a statement early Saturday announcing his death. He and his brother, Dimebag Darrell, formed Pantera in 1981. Dimebag, whose real name was Darrell Lance Abbott, was shot to death while on stage with the band Damageplan in 2004. The two brothers founded Damageplan in 2003 after Pantera broke up. Paul was most recently in the band...

Israelis, Palestinians await William's inaugural royal visit

Jun 23, 2018

JERUSALEM — Prince William is set to arrive in Israel and the Palestinian territories this week for the first official visit of a member of the British royal family, ending the monarchy's decades-long mostly hands-off approach to one of the world's most sensitive regions. Though the trip is being billed as non-political, and places a special emphasis on technology and joint Israeli-Arab projects, the Duke of Cambridge will also be meeting with the Israeli and Palestinian leaders and visiting landmark Jerusalem sites at the heart of the century-old conflict. The prince kicks off his Middle East visit Sunday in Jordan...

Ornate NYC theater, used for years as a gym, to be restored

Jun 23, 2018

NEW YORK — For years, Long Island University's basketball team played in a French Baroque movie palace in downtown Brooklyn. The gilded wall fountains, plastered statuettes and towering, one-of-a-kind Wurlitzer organ pipes of the historic Paramount Theater were preserved by the university when it converted the big hall into a gym in the 1960s. Now, a partnership of New York developers is returning the theater, which once hosted the likes of Frank Sinatra, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and Chuck Berry, to its former musical glory. They ceremonially kicked off the plan this past week by lowering the scoreboard from the...
