According to a survey conducted by Monster.com, 76% of workers seeking new employment cite their "toxic" boss as the primary reason. Yip's allegorical book draws inspiration from real-world toxic work cultures and transforms them into a fantasy office setting filled with literal predatory animals who oppress their meek underlings.
The story in the book is set in motion by the character Wolf, who kills the beloved leader of the staff, Monkey, in an attempt to steal the company's riches. Wolf takes it a step further by placing the blame for the murder on his fellow executives, illustrating the ruthless nature of office politics that Yip criticizes.
Yip's tale goes beyond illustrating the deviousness of many office executives. In 'Animal Spirits', Monkey gets revenge on his killer by haunting him from the grave and preventing Wolf from obtaining the wealth he would go to any lengths to acquire.
According to Yip, the ultimate triumph of good over evil within the story is meant to offer hope to workers currently struggling under greedy and immoral executives.
While the story contains murder and other forms of treachery, the author has ensured that humor and relatability are woven throughout, allowing 'Animal Spirits' is available in both e-book and paperback formats.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
H.C. Yip enjoyed a successful career in the finance industry until he was laid off during the COVID-19 pandemic. This left him feeling betrayed by his bosses and reeling from other tragic life events, such as the loss of both his mother and his dog, his faithful companion for 15 years.
Amidst growing anxiety and depression, Yip became an author who draws upon his own personal experiences to write relatable, cautionary tales like the one at the heart of 'Animal Spirits'.
