George Oluikpe Opens a New Chapter on Flexipillar Island
Oct 24, 2026
A flood brings displaced creatures together in a colorful island story about friendship, survival, and the risks of trusting appearances.
Wilmington, Delaware Oct 23, 2026 (Issuewire.com) - A world reshaped by a great flood becomes the setting for George C. Oluikpe's children's book, Beginning a New Life on FLEXIPILLAR ISLAND. After losing their homes, creatures from different places gather on a mysterious island where caterpillars take center stage and create a new identity for themselves--the "flexipillars." As the creatures settle into their new surroundings, personalities emerge, friendships form and the struggle to survive becomes increasingly complicated.
The story introduces young readers to a colorful cast of flexipillars, each with distinctive traits, backgrounds, diets and expectations about what their next life will bring. Vicepillar takes pride in his royal ancestry, Ladypillar embraces her beauty, Monarpillar imagines becoming "the king of butterflies," while other characters reveal different ways of facing danger. The island's challenges, including hungry birds, spiders, army ants and the consequences of keeping secrets, gradually expose the importance of awareness, cooperation and looking beyond first impressions.
At the heart of the story is a simple question: what happens when creatures forced from their homes must learn to build a life together? Through the flexipillars' experiences, the book explores new beginnings, friendship, courage, adaptation and survival. Its imaginative island setting gives young readers an accessible way to encounter the natural world while following characters who must make choices in an environment filled with both opportunity and danger.
"I am an educator, with a background in curriculum development, experimental psychology and educational psychology," said George C. Oluikpe. "This book has been inspired by my experience in working with my students and adults."
Oluikpe currently works as an administrator in Brooklyn, New York, where his experiences working with students and adults have influenced his approach to storytelling. Beginning a New Life on FLEXIPILLAR ISLAND combines that educational perspective with an imaginative cast of insects and a setting built around displacement, adaptation and community.
Beginning a New Life on FLEXIPILLAR ISLAND is available through major online booksellers. Readers can learn more about George C. Oluikpe and his work at georgeoluikpebookly.com.
