Luriya Provides Tips for Confirming the Authenticity of a Diamond

NEW YORK, March 5, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Authenticity, in the era of fake news and imitations, is difficult to come by. However, in the world of precious stones and diamonds, authenticity is not only pursued but also revered.
Luriya, a company that deals with buying and selling diamonds, discusses the importance of certificates of authenticity.
"When buying or selling a diamond, a precious stone, or other types of jewelry, the first step toward readiness and getting the best deal for your piece is to equip yourself with enough know-how," says Fima Kandinov, Luriya's expert appraiser. "Having been in the business for more than 20 years, we have seen a lot of people come in and tell us that they have been low-balled about the true value of their piece because their knowledge about stones and jewelry is close to none."
Contrary to how big jewelry companies make it to be, a lot goes into purchasing a diamond. The value of a stone is measured through its rarity, quality, cut, and general appearance.
"There are certainly a number of ways to inform yourself. One of those ways? Have your stone authenticated and certified," says Kandinov.
A document of authenticity comes in many forms and depends on the certifying body. It should explicitly say the rarity, the quality, and the overall value of your piece. There are multiple laboratories that can provide such information but the four most prominent are the IGI (International Gemological Institute), the EGL (European Gemological Laboratory), the AGS (American Gem Society), and the GIA (Gemological Institute of America).
So, what's the difference between these certifications and which one should you choose?
The IGI is one of the largest of its kind. With laboratories around the world, its primary location is found in Antwerp, Belgium. While the IGI is extremely reliable and widely used, it is most popular in Asian countries.
Meanwhile, the EGL is well known for its large global presence and for researching and executing diamond grading techniques for stones that weigh less than one carat.
The American Gemological Society, otherwise known as the AGS, has been recognized around the world for its scientific research and original approach to grading diamonds on a numerical scale as opposed to an alphabetical one.
"While other certifications are reliable and widely accepted, Luriya prefers to see a certificate from the GIA," remarks Kandinov. The GIA, more formally known as the Gemological Institute of America, is the world's most prominent authority when it comes to diamonds, colored stones, and pearls. Other than diamond grading, the GIA conducts a large amount of research and provides a variety of educational resources as well. With locations around the world including New York City's Diamond District, the GIA has over 3,000 employees including scientists, educators, and certified diamond graders. "For all these reasons and many more, Luriya prefers a certificate of authenticity from the GIA," concludes Kandinov.
