Online therapy/therapist in South Africa
Dr. Johan Cloete (Online therapist operating in South Africa) recently added EMDR to the range of treatment methods that he offers his patients. According to him, EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. Research confirmed that it is a type of therapy that is very effective in treating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other trauma-related problems. It has also been used successfully to treat such problems as OCD, Depression, Social Anxiety Disorder, and other mental health problems.
Dr. Cloete explains that there is a wide range of treatment methods for trauma victims. After mastering most of them he was introduced to EMDR and recently became one of the top trained EMDR therapists in South Africa.
According to him, EMDR therapy works with the reality that the mind can recover from psychological trauma much in the same way as the body recovers from physical trauma. When you cut your hand, your body works to close the wound. If a foreign object or repeated injury irritates the wound, it festers and causes pain. Once the block is removed, healing resumes.
EMDR therapy works with the assumption that a similar sequence of events occurs with mental processes. The brain’s information processing system naturally moves toward mental health. If the system is blocked or imbalanced by the impact of a disturbing event, the emotional wound festers and can cause intense suffering. Once the block is removed, healing resumes.
Using the detailed protocols and procedures learned in EMDR therapy training sessions, clinicians help clients to remove the blocks that keep them chained to events in the past. And to activate their natural healing processes
Currently, dr Cloete prefers EMDR as a treatment method in trauma work. The reason for this is the fact that EMDR uses “bilateral stimulation” to activate the brains capacity to heal itself from memories attached to difficult life experiences like trauma, abuse, bullying, and bereavement. Bilateral stimulation is done using eye movements, sounds to each ear, or by touch using vibrating buzzers or hand taps. These activities activates the left and right sides of the brain, allowing an “unprocessed” memory to become less distressing to you and part of your past, rather than a problem in the present.
EMDR was developed over 30 years ago. Yet it can still be a problem to find a fully trained and accredited EMDR therapist. This is why Dr. Cloete made the necessary modifications to his rooms and methods to make it accessible as an online therapy. To state it simply: Anyone can now get the benefits of EMDR therapy online. With a fully trained and accredited EMDR therapist. Without ever leaving your home.
