Save Pip Community Supporters Reports Community Protest Over Grand Saline Library Cat's Removal
Oct 3, 2026
Austin, Texas Oct 3, 2026 (Issuewire.com) - Residents gathered in Grand Saline to peacefully express their concerns about the planned removal of Pip, the familiar cat at the Grand Saline Public Library. The community demonstration brought attention to the October 13 deadline set by city officials and residents' requests for further public discussion before Pip is permanently rehomed.
Participants attended for several reasons, including concern for Pip's welfare, questions about the city's decision-making process, and a desire for the community to have an opportunity to be heard. Supporters describe Pip as a well-cared-for cat who has become a familiar presence in the library and whose daily care is an important consideration in the discussion.
The demonstration also highlighted the role of peaceful civic participation in local government. Participants exercised their right to assemble and express their views about an issue affecting their community. While not all residents share the same position on Pip's continued presence in the library, supporters say disagreement should not prevent respectful public discussion.
The city manager has stated that city officials have received ongoing concerns about the permanent presence of a cat in the library, including potential liability, operational considerations, allergies, medical concerns, fear, animal welfare, and the use of city resources. The city directed that arrangements be made to rehome Pip no later than October 13, 2026.
Supporters have questioned whether the concerns can be addressed through existing safeguards or additional reasonable accommodations. They say Pip receives consistent care and supervision and want the circumstances surrounding his care and presence in the building considered before a permanent decision is carried out.
Questions have also arisen about a reported animal-welfare complaint and warning. Supporters have said they have not independently verified the report through documentation made available to them. The available information does not establish whether an investigation occurred or whether an agency made any finding concerning Pip's care. The report therefore remains unconfirmed by the supporters.
Residents are seeking an opportunity for the City Council to hear community concerns, review the information underlying the removal directive, and consider whether alternatives are available. Their request is for a public discussion before the deadline, rather than for concerns about patrons, employees, or public resources to be dismissed.
The demonstration reflects differing views within the community about how to balance the needs of a public facility with the welfare of an animal that residents have come to know. Supporters say they intend to continue advocating respectfully for Pip and seeking clarification about the decision.
For those participating, the issue extends beyond the presence of a cat. It concerns community involvement, transparent communication, and the opportunity for residents to raise questions about decisions affecting a shared public space.
Supporters continue to ask city officials to consider the facts, hear the community, and evaluate reasonable alternatives before Pip is removed from the library.
