Karachi, Pakistan - February 12, 2024 /Baden Bower/ —

The Student Health and Well-Being (SHAW) initiative, founded by Dr. Sahar Rameez and under the leadership of Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Afridi, who is a renowned psychiatrist and Distinguish National Professor (DNP) in Pakistan, is proud to announce its latest efforts in integrating health and education for the betterment of young students. Focused on the age group of 18 to 29 years, SHAW is dedicated to enhancing academic success through improved health outcomes.
"Health and education are intrinsically linked, and our goal at SHAW is to ensure that every student in Pakistan has access to comprehensive health services that support their academic journey," said Dr. Sahar Rameez.
The initiative offers a wide range of services, including well-being assessments, both virtual and in-person primary and counselling services, research training programs, health research consultancy and extensive online resources through their digital platform. These are designed to provide students with the tools and support necessary for both physical and mental well-being, which are essential for academic success.
"Our approach is not just about treating health issues; it's about creating an environment that fosters well-being and empowers students to excel in their studies and beyond," added Dr. Rameez.
SHAW's programs are implemented nationwide, focusing on being cost-effective and broadly applicable in low-middle-income settings. The initiative is instrumental in advocating for mental health and student empowerment, recognizing this demographic's unique challenges in Pakistan.
Moreover, SHAW is actively engaged in research to continually enhance and adapt its services to the evolving needs of students. This commitment to evidence-based practice ensures that the initiative remains at the forefront of health and educational support services.
In addition to direct student services, SHAW is also involved in community and campus-based projects, surveys, outreach programs, and provides consultancy services to other community service providers aimed at raising awareness and understanding of the importance of health in educational achievement.
"As we move forward, our vision is to expand SHAW's reach globally, ensuring that students not only from Pakistan but around the world come together to conduct health research and find solutions in an evidence-based practice leading to global health leaders. We are now looking for collaborative projects with international universities and their students to showcase research that says “For the students, by the students “ for improved global health outcomes .Through this initiative we strongly advocate for equality, equity , diversity and availability of health services among youth," Dr. Rameez stated.
