What does a 5A size mean? The letter “A” stick is the thinnest type of drumstick made. The original labeling of “A” was for orchestral playing, when the labeling was started at the turn of the 20th century. While it is not as thick as an “S” (street) or “B” (band) size, it is the most versatile and will give the best dynamic range. The “5” refers to the circumference of the stick. The lower the number, the wider the circumference.
Hickory is the medium weight wood used for drumsticks–oak is more dense, and maple, less dense. A less dense weighted material is easier to play at faster speeds, so again, the hickory material is the best of both worlds, and gives the Tempi Fluorescent Drumsticks great versatility. Hickory is also more durable than maple, and will last longer.
