For the Vintage series, this time it introduces In Who has Done It?, in Italian Nelle loro mani, the novel by Hilda Lawrence, translated by Marina Grassini, in distribution from September 2023.
Completely paralyzed and unable to speak due to the shock of her son's apparent suicide, Nora Manson enjoys the best care possible thanks to her wealth. She is surrounded by nurses who look after her full-time, doctors, husband, relatives, and caring friends.
But she lives in a state of mortal fear, because she suspects that her son, an aspiring writer, did not take his own life, and she perceives that she is on the killer's list, only that she doesn't know when he will strike, and that if he gave the slightest sign of vitality would only bring its end closer. So how can she communicate with someone who trusts her and get out of the deadly trap that holds her prisoner? If a man is used to living in "noise", Nora's life is lived in silence, which explodes in all her power. A deafening silence, which never abandons her: in fact, it is not possible for her to communicate with her own voice, she does not eat independently and lies motionless in her bed.
The main peculiarity that emerges from the first pages of the novel is the stark contrast between the magnificence of the Manson house and the Evil that pervades, day after day, Nora's room. Perhaps the latter's only lifeline and the only person she trusts is her nurse Sills, a very young and enterprising woman, who takes care of Mrs. Norman with love and patience.
Nora and Sills thus establish a strong relationship, destined to become long-lasting. An admirable gift of the nurse is in fact her empathy: she always manages to clearly read every silence of her patient.
Hilda Lawrence was an American mystery writer, who worked for Macmillan Publishers, in their clipping department, as well as for reading to the blind. She didn't write many mystery novels, as apart from today's read, she only wrote three others: A Time to Die (1945), Death of a Doll (1947), and The Pavilion (1948). In 1949 a collection of novellas/short stories was published under the title of Duet of Death.
