March 17, 2020 - /PressAdvantage/ - Yard Busters Landscaping is an experienced and knowledgeable lawn care provider in the Calgary, Alberta area. As spring is fast approaching, the company would like to pass on some tips on how those in the Calgary area can have a greener lawn this spring. They say that by following this advice any homeowner can make the dream of having a greener lawn become a reality.
Business owner, Wayne Van Meter, had this to say about having a greener lawn this spring, “Most homeowners spend many hours each spring working to improve the looks of their home's exteriors. One of those tasks usually includes trying to make their lawn look greener. Although some people seem to see this as a chore, it really isn’t that hard if a homeowner follows a few simple rules when it comes to spring grass maintenance. Any homeowner that follows our green grass enhancing tips stands a good chance of having their lawn look better than it ever has.”
Van Meter mentioned that one of the most important things to do before prepping a lawn for the spring season is to power rake it. This will get out any slowly decomposing bio debris such as leaves, roots, and branches that cause grasses to become matted down. This layer of thatch when removed will allow essential nutrients to reach the soil once again. He says this may not need to be done every year depending on how much thatch is present
Another tip that the owner offered is to aerate the lawn. He says that over time the natural air and water found in soil that keeps it soft and spongy gets removed. This causes soil to become much more compact. Van Meter says that compact soil does not let such things as beneficial water, air, grass seed, and fertilizer penetrate deeply into the soil where it will do the most good. Aeration will loosen up the soil and allow the essential growing elements mentioned above to penetrate far enough into the soil to benefit the grass. He added that once aeration has been done a homeowner must smartly water their lawn. Watering the lawn too much or too little can be just as bad for grass as not watering it at all. Van Meter says that on average a lawn only needs about an inch of water to grow in a green and healthy way. That figure goes down with the amount of rainfall that has been received in a week. The company owner says that if someone does not have an irrigation system they will also have to make sure they move their sprinklers around in a manner where the whole yard is watered.
He also advised taking care when mowing once the grass starts on a healthy growth cycle again. Cutting the grass too low or with a dull lawnmower blade tends to burn or injure the grass and that will result in a lawn losing some of its color. Van Meter says a homeowner can look on their package of grass seed to see what the recommended cut height is for it. He added most home improvement centers or hardware stores will do lawnmower blade sharpening or have already sharp replacement blades available. The company owner says that people should also seek the advice of a local lawn professional when it comes to the fertilization of their grass. He says proper fertilization is the key when it comes to increasing the health of one’s turf and healthy turf causes grass to be greener.
Van Meter also added that anyone who does not have the time to put in the effort to make their lawn greener themselves can call them and ask for help. The lawn care techs at the company have many years of experience under their belts when it comes to keeping Calgary lawns looking better and greener.
